Fascinated by philosophy, language and poetry, Sol Michiels (1951) initially started creating drawings and oil paintings. Ten years study of Japanse calligraphy and sumi-e at the Heian Culture Center made her change her medium of painting to ink, a less correctable and more spontaneous way of creating art.
Michiel's art is often inspired by Chinese characters and symbols and reflects the energy of the moment it was created. Despite her respect for eastern traditions, the artist will abstracts, fragment and even personalize the symbols. She will also treat the delicate, handcrafted paper in such a way it feels old and altered. Her sculptures as well are unmistakenly inspired by her eastern studies.
The art work of Michiels stand out by it's vitality and expressiveness and reflects the artist's restless spirit. To balance this restlessnes she uses soft and quite tonalities. The work of Michiels radiates without exception a serene and poetic atmosphere.
